okay. for some time now, i've had pain at the are that says External oblique.. maybe a bit higher. It usually starts hurting (no, is not constant) after walking say a mile or so, or biking for a distance. Or sometimes, when i wake up. I'm assuming in the case of the latter two it's a matter of positioning of somesorts. Leaning too far forward, or sleeping at a weird angle. would this be a fair assumption of the cause? (in any case, the pain usually is at the back, with some twinges to the front.

Is this something serious, that should get looked at? or just bad positioning which i could correct myself?

Tcher--Derakon suggested that I take a stab at answering your question because I am a doctor (albeit, a gastroenterologist, not an orthopedic surgeon or neurologist). To answer your last question first, most back problems clear up on their own--surgery should only be a last resort. You can take care of your back by keeping your back and trunk muscles strong through regular back exercises, using proper lifting techniques, applying heat if the muscles spasm, using Tylenol or Naprosyn for pain, correcting any gait problems you may have (e.g., using orthopedic inserts if needed), stress reduction measures such as aerobic exercise and yoga if your life is in flux, and treating depression if present. Back pain with twinges that radiate to the front on only one side could be nerve root irrtation from a disc problem, but the treatment is no different. Hope this helps!

This is Syn, by the by. Derakon's dad is correct! though i'll add that if the pain has been persisting over some weeks despite treatment with anti-inflammatories, see your GP. :) (if, by positioning, you were worried about your kidneys, don't--they're more central and higher. plus it sounds purely like a muscle spasm. Keep hydrated, keep your electrolytes in balance, stretch)

ah, thank you both. I did worry a tad but it wasn't at the level that would cause me to truly think i needed surgery (if it was, i'd have done it weeks ago). By the sound of it I'd say it's a combination of positioning (shitty chair) and hydration (fuck you florida fuck you)...
