whee. i recently upgraded from my core2duo e6600 and evga 8800 gts cards to new hardware...

currently is a phenom 2 X4 955, 3.2ghz. with a ati radeon 4870 512mb....

I noticed however that i had so much old hardware pieces including the above mentioned cpu and card that i could build a whole new comp, and sell it off! which i did :D

Now of course i must splurge all that money on moar hardware!

However, here is the dilemma. 28" monitor, or 2nd graphics card for crossfire?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254026 is the monitor.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102768 is the graphics card.. there is however a 1gb version. I'm wondering if the 1gb version would work for the crossfire, or if it *has* to be the same card.

If i go with the monitor, that means i'll have a 19" spare as i'd be using the 28" and 22" for dual screen :D

still, opinions! what should i dooooooo

I'm not sure how the different card versions would work. I would guess that it either doesn't work, or will limit the second card to 512 megs. Of course, that second option makes too much sense, so it might not happen.
I would be more of a fan of the 28" monitor. Though I would also go with something with a larger contrast ratio. Though maybe I've been spoiled with my 5000:1 contrast ratio X3

from what i've been reading though, anything more than 2k or so contrast ratio isn't really visible in the first place...

Maybeh, I've not done an indepth search on the subject. Still, that monitor looks odd, it has no DVI, just a DSUB and a HDMI connector.

aye, no DVI is odd though it comes with a hdmi-dvi connector. still, it looks awesome for the price.. and 1000+ reviews seem to show it being good...

from anything i can see by googling "contrast ratio" or such for LCD monitors, it's a much hyped stat purely for marketing. there's dynamic and static contrast ratio.. the higher one is likely the 5000 one but the static i believe is one most used...

Most of my searching shows articles and forum posts from 2003. I just asked my friends who 'know' about such things. Now, if they are actually better then random people on the net I'm not sure...

I have found Tom's Hardware to be little more then a hive of fail and lame, best ignored. Or rather, best hunted down to the man and shot.

admittedly there's some not always good stuff on there but the point still stands. The dynamic contrast ratio is often the one listed, and it's very high... while the static one is often less than 1k, and is the one that truly matters :P

If by, 'not always' you mean 'never'. Either way, I think we wandered a bit off topic X3

indeed :P you'd still suggest the screen though then?

Most crossfire setups I've seen, at best, get 50% more FPS. Personally I would rather have the larger monitor, though I've also not got any games that I can't max out the display settings.
